Under certain circimstances the government can keep property which it feels was connected to the commission of a crime. Clearly it can keep illegal substances (drugs, munitions) or stolen property which has been recovered. Forfeiture, however, deals with property connected with the alleged commission of a crime; the car or house the drugs were found it, cash found on your person at the time of arrest, airplanes, boats, electronics and so on. Forfeiture is a civil action relating to an underlying criminal action, one that each citizen has a right to contest. Many such cases are negotiated between your attorney and the government. If an agreement cannot be reached both sides have access to the Courts.
